Gibraltar's application for full membership of UEFA cleared in 2013. The under-17 side took shape that year as the 54th national set-up admitted to European football, a status the players still carry in the nickname Team 54.

The team's first match came on 24 October 2013, away to the Republic of Ireland in Yerevan, and ended in a 4-1 defeat. Four days later, against Armenia, George Wink scored the goal that opened the side's history. Wins were slower to arrive: the first at this level was recorded only on 10 September 2021, a 2-1 friendly victory over the Faroe Islands.

Qualifying draws for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship keep Gibraltar apart from Spain.

Jayce Olivero moved up and became the youngest Gibraltar international of the UEFA era at his debut, a record Dylan Borge later broke.

Home matches are played in red and white, the colours of the Gibraltar flag, at the Victoria Stadium, which holds 5,000. The side has yet to reach a UEFA U17 Championship finals or take a title of any kind.
