Górnik Zabrze U19

When Łukasz Podolski hung up his boots in 2021, he did it back where he'd started: with Górnik Zabrze, on the training pitches of the youth academy he'd left as a teenager for Cologne in 1995. He'd become a world champion by then, but the club he returned to sign off with was the one that first put him through U19 training in the black and green.

Zabrze's academy has kept producing players who go the distance. Łukasz Skorupski joined at twelve and spent close to a decade working through the age groups before becoming a first-choice goalkeeper at senior level. Arkadiusz Milik arrived later, at seventeen, and trained under Adam Nawałka before his own career took off.

The U19s have won the Polish championship at their level three times — in 1967, 1989 and 2020 — and finished runners-up on four further occasions. The U17s have their own record of three national titles, the most recent coming in 2023, when the side beat Legia Warszawa 4-1 away in the Central Youth League final.

Home matches are played at the Stadion Walki, a ground with steel stands holding around 500 people — a modest setting for a production line that has sent players into the Polish national team and beyond. The club and its academy trace back to the Górnik Zabrze founded in December 1948, though the dedicated youth football school was formally set up in 2003, built on what had been the club's football youth section.

Fans still call the club's players Górnicy — the miners — a nod to the Silesian coal country around Zabrze. For the current U19 group, the task is the same one every academy generation faces: hold a place in the Central Youth League and keep the pipeline that carried Podolski, Skorupski and Milik through it running.
