Groesbeek

In the spring of 1987, VV Germania Groesbeek won the Oost District Cup for a second time, and the run carried the club straight into the KNVB Beker against HFC Haarlem, a professional side several rungs above anything Groesbeek had faced. Germania lost 1-2. The scoreline mattered less than the fact that a village club from the Nijmegen countryside had reached that stage at all.

The club took shape on 1 May 1936, under circumstances now folded into local memory rather than record, and for much of its life wore orange and black, colours inherited from an earlier identity as SV Oranje-Zwart. Progress through the Dutch pyramid came slowly and in stages: a Vierde Klasse title in the 1950s, another in 1991, a longer spell working through the Tweede Klasse that stretched from the mid-1970s into the early 2000s, and eventually an Eerste Klasse championship in the middle of the following decade. None of it carried the club into the professional ranks, and none of it needed to; Germania's identity was built on that one afternoon against Haarlem and on the district cup that preceded it, not on a ladder of promotions.

Groesbeek itself sits close enough to Nijmegen that comparisons with the town's other club, De Treffers, are unavoidable, but Germania has kept to its own ground. Sportpark Noord, off the Nijmeegsebaan, holds around 2,500 people, modest even by amateur standards, and on a cup weekend or a derby afternoon it still fills with the kind of crowd a small club depends on rather than counts.
