The final of the 2014 Asian Games settled nothing that hadn't already been decided by geography. North Korea's under-23 side went into it against South Korea and came away with silver after a 1–0 defeat. Japan and China turn up as opponents too, but neither draws the crowd or the tension the way the South does.
The side carries the name Chollima, after the winged horse of North Korean legend, and it plays in red at home, white away. There was no year of founding in the way a club has one; the earliest match on record is a 1–0 win over China on 25 August 1990, and the age-group format only became the vehicle for Asian Games and continental youth football once the competitions themselves adopted it. A gold medal at the 2013 East Asian Games came the year before that Asian Games final.
Kim Kuk-bom made the step up from this age group to the senior team in 2016 and has gone on to nineteen caps there. The squad has not always shown up when expected — qualifying campaigns for the 2020 and 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cups both went by without them.
Home matches, when there are any to stage, fall to the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, a ground built for 150,000 and now holding 113,281 after renovation.
