Kufstein

Kufstein sits on the Inn in Tyrol, close enough to the Bavarian border that the club's fiercest rivalry, against SV Wörgl, is fought under a local rather than a national banner — the Unterland-Derby, a district affair rather than anything that troubles the wider Austrian game. Fußballclub Kufstein has carried that name only since 1987, when SC Kufstein merged with the amateur side ESV Kufstein; the blue and black on the shirts today comes from splitting the difference between SC's blue and white and ESV's black and white. Before that the club had already changed skin once, playing as SV Kufstein until the Second World War and as SC Kufstein for four decades after it.

The record that actually defines the club belongs to the older identity. As SC Kufstein, it won the Tiroler Landesliga six times between 1949 and 1983, the backbone of an era before regional football in Austria was reorganised into the tiers now in place. Two Regionalliga West titles followed, in 1993 and 2005, brief spells at a higher level that the club has not since repeated. The Tiroler Landespokal has been friendlier territory: six wins spread from 1983 to 2013, the most recent three coming in successive seasons either side of 2010, when Kufstein knew how to see out a cup run even without the squad to sustain a promotion push.

Thomas Silberberger played there between 2005 and 2010 before going on to manage the club himself and later Wolfsberger AC, one of the few names from Kufstein's books to build a coaching career on top of a playing one. Home matches are watched at the Kufstein Arena, still known locally by its older name, Grenzlandstadion, border-land stadium, a title that fits a club whose whole identity sits at the edge of Tyrol rather than the centre of it. It holds 4,500.
