Manfredonia

The Derby di Capitanata against Foggia Calcio has never needed extra explanation in this corner of Apulia, and for a spell after 2018 Manfredonia even had to share a shorter, stranger rivalry with a club carrying its own city's name: Manfredonia Football Club, born the year the original side collapsed under debt and folded into a phoenix outfit. That refoundation, in 2018, followed an earlier one from 2013, when bankruptcy had already forced the club to start over as ASD Manfredonia Football 1932 before settling into its current form. Trani and Barletta round out the list of towns whose visits still carry an edge.

None of that undoes what came before. The club had already won Serie D three times by the time it took Serie C2's Girone C in 2004-05, and an Eccellenza title in 2022-23 showed it could still climb back through the regional ranks when it had to. Stadio Miramare, holding just over 4,000, saw the earlier version of this club become the first professional side in Italy to play on a synthetic pitch.

Recent seasons have asked more of nerve than of ambition. In 2024-25 the Dolphins finished 15th in Serie D's Girone H on 37 points and only stayed up by beating San Severo 1-0 in the relegation play-out, the kind of match that turns a season on one moment rather than a table.

Giuseppe Pavone, a former Italy international, now runs the club's sporting side and is the name locals bring up first when the conversation turns to who has shaped Manfredonia beyond the pitch itself.
