Mayrhofen

Erich Schmidhofer spent the 1970s and 80s finding the net for SVg Mayrhofen before moving onto the club's board, a career arc that also took in an Austrian cross-country cycling title away from the pitch. He was among the top scorers when the club had its best run, in 1984, winning the Tiroler Meistertitel and going up to the Regionalliga West, then the third tier. Mayrhofen held their place there for three seasons before dropping back down, and it took until 2016/17 for another trophy to arrive, the Tiroler Liga.

The club, formed in Tyrol's Zillertal valley on 31 March 1953, plays in blue and white and carries the nickname Die Zillertaler after the valley itself. Home games are at the Alpenstadion, which holds 2,000 but can be opened up to 6,000 when needed. Across the lower tiers, the fixture with SV Wörgl has become the one that matters most to supporters, even without a name of its own attached to it.

Stefan Gredler was the other forward who carried the scoring load through that same successful stretch, and between the two of them Mayrhofen had the firepower to make the step up in 1984 possible. The club has stayed a community side since, without an academy or alumni that travelled far beyond Tyrol, its identity still resting on that one promotion and the men who scored the goals to earn it — Schmidhofer chief among them, still known there as much for the boardroom as for his finishing.
