Parkgate was born out of the local steel industry, established in 1969 as BSC Parkgate (British Steel Corporation Parkgate). The name shifted once in 1990 to RES Parkgate, then settled on Parkgate in 1994.
The club plays its home matches at the Roundwood Sports Complex, also known as the Rotherham Hospice Community Stadium.
Honours have come in fits and starts. The Northern Counties East League Division One title was claimed in 2007 and again in 2024. These results were not the result of a professional academy system, which the club does not possess. Instead, Parkgate has hosted professional players like Kyle Nix and Ben Starosta, who played for Sheffield United and Bradford City, bringing experience to the dressing room when needed.
The club has no official derby, though it has faced Sheffield FC in commemorative matches.
