Lamongan is a regency town in East Java, and its football team takes its main nickname from a sixteenth-century figure: Laskar Joko Tingkir, the Joko Tingkir Warriors, after the man who became Sultan Hadiwijaya. The second name, Lele Glagah, the Glagah Catfish, is a local one and stands for resilience. Persela, short for Persatuan Sepakbola Lamongan, has played since 18 April 1967.

The ground, Stadion Gelora Surajaya, once carried a quoted capacity of 25,000. After renovation to a single-seat configuration it holds 12,097.

The club's standing in the national game rests on 2001, when it won the Liga Indonesia Second Division, and on 2008, when it was a founding member of the Indonesia Super League. Its best finish there was fourth in 2011–12. Closer to home, Persela won the East Java Governor's Cup five times between 2003 and 2012. Its local derby is with Gresik United, a fixture often called the East Java Derby, though the name is also attached to matches against Persebaya Surabaya and Arema.

Relegation from Liga 1 came at the end of 2021–22. Since then the club has played in Liga 2 and reached the Championship Round in both 2023–24 and 2024–25.

The name most associated with Persela is Choirul Huda, goalkeeper and captain. He died in October 2017 after a collision during a match, and the club retired the number 1 shirt afterwards. Ahmad Bustomi, Malik Risaldi, Ady Setiawan and Saddil Ramdani also played for Indonesia, but Huda is the one Lamongan remembers first.
