Vietnam is the name that comes up whenever the Filipinas talk about who they need to beat. It took extra time and a penalty shootout to get past Vietnam in the 2025 SEA Games final, a 6–5 shootout after ninety scoreless minutes, and the win ended a run Vietnam had owned for years. Thailand sits in the same bracket of rivals; the Philippines beat them 3–0 in the final to take the 2022 ASEAN Women's Championship, the team's first continental title.

The side traces back to 1980, when Cristina Ramos founded the Philippine Ladies' Football Association, though it took until 1995 for the team to join FIFA through the Philippine Football Federation. Home matches are played in Manila, and the squad wears blue at home, white away. The nickname changed in 2022: Malditas was dropped in favour of Filipinas.

Sarina Bolden is the one who scored the country's first-ever goal at a FIFA Women's World Cup. That tournament, in 2023, saw the Philippines finish fourth in Group A after beating New Zealand 1–0, then losing to Switzerland and Norway. Hali Long, the captain, holds the team's cap record.

Further back, SEA Games bronze in 1985 and again in 2021 marked the years before the breakthrough came. Vietnam remains the measure the Filipinas set themselves against now, and Thailand the other name that keeps the rivalry alive.
