Sambenedettese

Walter Zenga spent two seasons in the Sambenedettese goal, from 1980 to 1982, before Internazionale came calling; Franco Causio also began here. That habit of sending players on runs through the club dates further back than either of them, to the merger of three local sides — Fortitudo, Serenissima and Forza e Coraggio — on 4 April 1923, out of which Sambenedettese took shape in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Nedo Sonetti took the club into Serie B in 1981, and Samb stayed there until 1989, the closest it has come to the top of Italian football. Two Serie C titles followed it into memory, in 1955-56 and 1973-74, along with the Coppa Italia Serie C of 1991-92, won against Siena. Luigi Cagni holds the club's appearance record across Serie A and B with 229 games, while Francesco Chimenti remains its leading scorer with 54 goals.

Money trouble has interrupted the club almost as often as results have defined it: bankruptcy and refoundation came in 1994, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2021, and again in 2023, when Vittorio Massi took ownership and restarted the club as U.S. Sambenedettese. Two Serie D championships, in 2000-01 and 2012-13, mark the seasons spent rebuilding from those collapses, and the most recent promotion, in 2025, has returned the club to Serie C for 2025-26.

Ascoli Calcio remains the fixture that matters most. The Derby del Tronto pits San Benedetto's seaside against Ascoli inland, and it is this tie, not table position, that still decides how a season at the Riviera delle Palme gets remembered.
