Andrew McHugh formed the club in 2014 as a Sunday League side with two friends, John McHugh and Ryan Palmer, and ran it under his stage name, Don Strapzy, who still manages the side. The Sunday circuit gave the club its first honours: the George Harley Cup in 2018, the Kent County Cup and Paul Picard Cup in 2019, and back-to-back Orpington and Bromley District Sunday Football League titles in 2021 and 2022.
The step up came in June 2024, when SE Dons announced a takeover of Forest Hill Park FC. For the 2024–25 season the team played under the joint name Forest Hill Park FC (SE Dons) at Ladywell Arena before the planned rebrand to SE Dons FC for 2025–26, a season they spent at the Oakwood Sports Ground in Crayford, also known as the VCD Sports Ground, in green and white.
That first season under their own name ended with promotion: a 4–2 win over Rochester United in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division play-off final sent them up to the Premier Division.
