Siegburger SV

Wolfgang Overath joined the youth side at Siegburg in 1953 and stayed until 1962. He later became a legend at 1. FC Köln and captained West Germany to the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Siegburger SV 04 is best known for having trained him.

In 1961 the first team won the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein, then the third tier of German football. That earned a place in the West German Amateur Championship, where they reached the final and lost to Holstein Kiel II. The club has not won a national title or the DFB-Pokal since.

The cup run that stands out came in 1980–81. SSV 04 beat BFC Preussen and SC Pfullendorf to reach the third round of the DFB-Pokal, then lost to VfB Oldenburg in extra time. They were back in the first round the following season.

Other players followed Overath out of the youth system. Hans Sarpei went on to Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Roma, with caps for both Germany and Ghana. Hans Cieslarczyk and Karl Flink both played for Germany, and both for Köln.

The name dates from 1909, when Siegburger FC, founded in 1904, merged into what became Siegburger SV 04. In the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis the blue-and-whites' main rivals are Bonner SC. The fixture has no name of its own, but the two sides have long been each other's closest opponents in the region.
