South Normanton Athletic

In South Normanton, workers in the ribbed stocking trade sat on wooden stools until the seats of their trousers wore shiny. The town has kept that detail as the club's nickname, The Shiners, and the club began as the miners' welfare side, South Normanton Miners Welfare, in 1926. It took the name Athletic only in 1990–91, when it entered the Central Midlands League.

The 1996–97 season shows how thinly the club was resourced. A fire destroyed the changing rooms, and to meet league deadlines the members converted a derelict building into temporary facilities. The money that went into it was money meant for floodlights. Without them the club was relegated from the Supreme Division. It was reinstated in 1998, once the floodlights at Lees Lane were finished.

The club folded at the end of 2007–08 because of problems on the committee, and was reformed under a new one chaired by Phil Bailey. The rebuilding was completed under Mark Wilson, appointed manager in 2013. The East Midlands Counties League Cup came in 2014–15, and the club was runners-up in that league in 2013–14 and again in 2016–17. The second of those finishes took the club up to the Midland League Premier Division, at Step 5 of the non-league pyramid.

In April 2020 the club resigned from the Midland Football League and dropped to Step 7 in the Central Midlands League, so that it could bring back a reserves team. The Shiners won the Central Midlands League South Division in 2024–25 and now play in the United Counties League Division One, at Step 6. Selston are the nearest rivals, and matches against them are treated as derbies. Holwell Sports are the other local side.
