Founders Field sits in Cheswick, a suburb north-east of Pittsburgh, and holds around 1,500 people. Steel City FC started out in 2019 as Pittsburgh Hotspurs, and it kept that name until February 2023, when the men's side merged with the women's team and the youth club Arsenal FC of Pittsburgh. The combined organisation took the Steel City name from the women's programme, which had been playing under it since 2014.

The club now competes in USL League Two after moving up from the NPSL. None of that carries the weight of the Steel City Derby, the meetings with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, the professional club across town. The most recent one came in the First Round of the 2026 Open Cup, which the Riverhounds took 2-1.

Michael Sullivan was picked up by Toronto FC in the 2025 MLS Super Draft, and Koven Johnson was taken by the Colorado Rapids in 2026.

On the field, the division titles have started to stack up: the NPSL's Great Lakes Division in both 2023 and 2024, then the Great Forest Division of USL League Two in 2025 after the switch.
