Tooting & Mitcham United

Dulwich Hamlet are the name Tooting & Mitcham United fans look for first in a fixture list, and the Dulwich–Tooting derby has outlasted the older feuds with Sutton United and Corinthian-Casuals. "United" was added to the name three years later.

The years around 1960 were the club's best. In 1958–59 they beat Bournemouth and Northampton Town in the FA Cup and reached the Third Round, where they drew with Nottingham Forest. The following season they won the Isthmian League Premier Division, the Surrey Senior Cup and the London Senior Cup. They also became the first amateur side in more than 30 years to reach the London Challenge Cup Final, where they lost to Chelsea.

In 1975–76 they went further still, reaching the Fourth Round after coming back to beat Swindon Town in a dramatic tie and replay. Bradford City ended the run. The London Senior Cup has kept coming their way since, most recently in 2021.

Alex Stepney kept goal here in 1961–63, then won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. Dario Gradi also played for the club in the 1960s and later became a manager of real influence at Crewe Alexandra. Michail Antonio came through the youth and reserve teams before signing for Reading.

The stripes gave the club a second nickname, "The Stripes", alongside "The Terrors". The black and white shirts arrived in 1956.

Sandy Lane was home from 1922 until 2002, when the club sold the site to developers and moved to Imperial Fields in Morden. Four of its streets carry the names of former players: Hasty Close, Slade Way, Pearson Way and Stepney Close.

Two old town clubs, Tooting and Mitcham, are where it all started, and their merger is why the club carries both names.
