Unterrath

The HR-Schrott-Arena holds 2,500 by the club's own count, though outside listings put the figure as high as 4,000 or 5,000. SG Düsseldorf-Unterrath plays there in black and white as SGU, a name that folds two older clubs into one: FC Unterrath, dating to 1912, and Rheinwacht Unterrath, from 1924, merged in 1993 into the club that carries both years in its full title.

On the senior side, the high point stayed modest — promotion to the Bezirksliga Niederrhein in 2004, the fifth tier of German football, and nothing since has topped it. The youth setup has done more with less: the D-Jugend went up to the Niederrheinliga in 2023, and the U19s reached the DFB-Nachwuchsliga for 2025/26.

That gap is the point of the club. Unterrath has made its name as a place where players pass through on the way somewhere else. Amin Younes came up through the youth ranks here before Gladbach, Ajax and Napoli; Tobias Raschl followed a similar route out to Gladbach, Dortmund and Fortuna Düsseldorf. Against that traffic, one name runs the other way: Horst Häfner, who had already played for Germany and for Fortuna Düsseldorf, chose to close out his career at FC Unterrath in 1967, an amateur by then.
