Promotion to the National League South in 2022–23 came with the Southern League Premier Division South title, and it mattered because of what had come before it: four years earlier, in 2018–19, Weston-super-Mare had gone down for the first time in a 132-year history that had never before included relegation from the Southern League system.

The club's roots go back to 1887, though the side that exists now dates its re-formation to 1948, having twice been wound up during the two world wars. It plays as The Seagulls, in blue and white, at the Optima Stadium, a 3,500-capacity ground still known to many by its old name, Woodspring Stadium.

The clearest thread through the club's recent years runs through the loan system with the bigger Bristol clubs. Ollie Watkins spent the 2014–15 season here on loan from Exeter City, scored 10 goals in around two dozen appearances, and went on through Brentford and Aston Villa to an England call-up and a move to Al-Hilal. Cheltenham Town has kept sending players down more recently.

Scott Bartlett took the team up as champions in 2022–23 and left in September 2025 for Eastleigh, with Scott Rogers taking over. Off the pitch, Paul Bliss stepped down as chairman in the summer of 2025 after 39 years in the role, handing it to his son Oli while staying on as president.

The derby with Clevedon Town carries the weight of that shared 1887 starting point, the two having met in Weston-super-Mare's first recorded competitive match; Bath City is treated as the other fixture that matters. In the FA Cup, the club's best run came only this season, a run to the Third Round in 2025–26.
