Whitehawk

Division One South was won in 2011-12, the Premier Division the year after, and by the summer of 2013 Whitehawk had climbed into the Conference South for the first time in the club's history.

That same year, with the club newly arrived at a higher level, its board tried to rename it Brighton City Football Club. The application was rejected, and a second attempt in 2015 was withdrawn before it went anywhere; the Hawks name stayed.

The FA Cup gave the club its widest audience. In 2015-16 Whitehawk reached the second round for the first time, but Jordan Rose's late equaliser against Lincoln City went out live on the BBC, and Juan Cruz Gotta headed in an added-time leveller against Dagenham & Redbridge in the replay before the Second Round tie was finally lost. It eclipsed even the club's run to the fourth qualifying round back in 1988-89.

Not every headline was sporting. On the pitch, the fixture that still matters most is against Lewes.

None of it was built to last this way. Whitehawk began in 1945 as Whitehawk & Manor Farm Old Boys, a side put together as the war ended, long before promotions or a name change were ever a question.
