Wulfrath

1. FC Wülfrath itself dates only to 27 June 1975, when three older sides — SV Flandersbach, formed in 1927, Sportfreunde Schlupkothen and SSG Wülfrath — merged into one club. The Flandersbach lineage is the reason some club literature still nods back to 1927, though the entity playing today is younger by nearly half a century.

Its best years came under coach Dietmar Grabotin in the early 1990s: the Landesliga Niederrhein title in 1990 led to the Verbandsliga Niederrhein championship in 1992 and promotion into the Oberliga Nordrhein, then the fourth tier. The club could not hold that level and dropped straight back down the following season. Further Landesliga titles followed in 1981 and 2004, but the club has since settled into a pattern of moving between the Landesliga and the Bezirksliga rather than pushing back toward the fourth tier.

The name most attached to the club is Maximilian Wagener. Born in Wülfrath in 1995, he started out in FC Wülfrath's youth ranks before moving into Bayer Leverkusen's academy, and from there went on to play in the UEFA Champions League.
