Bugesera Stadium

Bugesera Stadium sits in Nyamata, a quiet town in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, and it does not look like a place built for spectacle. The surface below is bright green synthetic grass. It is not a grand arena. It is a functional one.

Completion in autumn 2019 marked the end of a reconstruction that began around 2017, costing roughly Rwf 9 billion. The new surface is artificial turf, which means the ground does not turn to mud when the rains come. Before this, the old Nyamata Stadium was difficult to use during the wet season. Bugesera FC chose this new venue because they needed a reliable surface. They have played there since the autumn of 2019, and the club has not moved. The stadium holds 10,000 people, with 3,000 seats under cover, though the capacity has not changed since opening.

The ground also hosts events outside football. It took the 2026 Umurenge Kagame Cup national finals for football, volleyball and basketball, and it was the site of a Rwanda women’s national team friendly against Burundi on September 15, 2023. A Summer Country Tour concert featuring Kitoko, The Ben and Bruce Melodie was held there as well. There is a running track around the pitch, and floodlights allow evening play. The draw brought them together early in the year for the cup finals, but the stadium itself remains simple. It is not a temple of football. It is a place that works when the rain stops falling.
