The ground is named after Hugo Palenque Sánchez, a player for the national team between 1963 and 1967. He was part of the squad that won the 1963 South American Championship, a title that has been carried forward in the naming of the stadium. A final for the 2018 Bolivian Women's National Championship was played here, where Deportivo ITA defeated San Martín de Porres 4-3.
