Harry Gwala Stadium

It carries the name of Harry Gwala, but its history runs deeper than the renaming. Jan Smuts Stadium was what locals called it for decades, a place where football was played long before the modern renovation. That work began in earnest for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, turning a modest 10,000-seat venue into a 12,000-capacity arena.

During the World Cup, the pitch hosted training sessions for the Paraguayan national team, but the stadium never saw official tournament matches. It passed through quieter periods before becoming a home for Royal AM FC, who used the ground from 2021 until their expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in April 2025. Maritzburg United (later Durban City FC) also called it home before leaving in the 2023/2024 season.

Matches here have their moments. The 2018 MTN 8 quarter-final saw Cape Town City edge out Maritzburg United 1-0, while the following month's Nedbank Cup semi-final ended with Sundowns beating Maritzburg 3-1. More recent history includes a June 2023 pitch invasion and gunshots during an ABC Motsepe playoff semi-final between Umsinga United and Orbit College. Beyond sport, the stadium is frequently used for political rallies, including ANC manifesto launches. The attendance record is unclear, though a match against Orlando Pirates in 2019 drew 11,600 spectators.
