Herns Way

Herns Way sits in the flat landscape of Hertfordshire, a ground where Welwyn Garden City FC took up residence in 1968. The club played their first senior fixture there against Knebworth on November 16, 1968.

Osvaldo Ardiles, the former Tottenham Hotspur ambassador and World Cup winner, officially unveiled two new spectator stands and an upgraded clubhouse. The turnstiles themselves came from Tottenham’s old White Hart Lane. The covered seating capacity sits at 220, a figure that met Grade F requirements for the fifth tier of the non-league pyramid. The original stand could only hold 83 spectators.

The playing surface is an artificial 3G pitch, a CCGrass Max carpet installed around September 2020. The ground has floodlights, installed in 1986-87.

Welwyn Garden City FC were founded in 1921, long before they moved to this address. The ground has hosted matches ranging from local cup ties to an FA Trophy encounter against Burgess Hill Town on December 15, 2020. A Watford FC pre-season friendly was scheduled for August 2018 but was cancelled. The capacity has varied in reporting, with some sources listing 3,000, though the current covered seating is a fraction of that. There is no official attendance record for the ground, though individual crowds have reached 2,000 for a match against FC Romania.
