Mersin Stadyumu

The Mersin Stadyumu does not pretend to be anything other than what it is: a multi-purpose arena built for an event that has long since passed. Its exterior tells that story immediately. Inside, the geometry shifts. The pitch is green, a tight weave of bermuda and lolium grass.

The ground opened in 2013, timed to coincide with the Mediterranean Games. It was not built to last, or at least not to remain the same. Its name has changed twice since the day it first saw a crowd, shifting from Mersin Olympic Stadium to Mersin Arena before settling on its current title. Tenants have come and gone with the same rhythm. The original Mersin İdman Yurdu played here for a few years before moving on, leaving the space to Yeni Mersin İdman Yurdu, who arrived in 2019. Hatayspor now use it on a temporary basis, displaced from their own home by the earthquake that devastated the city in 2023.

There is no official website for the stadium, and no street address with a building number to pin it down. It sits near Baraj Yolu in the Yenişehir district, owned by TOBB, the Turkish Chamber of Commerce. The capacity of 25,534 is divided between normal seats, VIP boxes, and suites, but the specific breakdown matters less than the fact that the place exists at all, a concrete bowl in a city that has seen its share of upheaval.
