Sân vận động Tự Do

Sân vận động Tự Do is the only stadium in Vietnam with a permanent concrete velodrome surrounding the playing field. Built 1935–1936 by the French colonial administration, it opened as Stade Olympique de Hué. The name changed to Bao Long Stadium following the birth of Crown Prince Nguyễn Phúc Bảo Long that same year. After the August Revolution, it became Sân vận động Tự Do.

The velodrome is 500 metres in circumference with a 45-degree banking, making it unique in Indochina. It hosted the first Indochina Cycling Championship in 1935 and remained a venue for motorcycle racing. The pitch itself measures 105 x 68 metres with a natural grass surface. The stadium holds 25,000 spectators.

The ground sits in Phú Hội ward, bounded by Nguyễn Thái Học, Bà Triệu, Lê Quý Đôn, and Trần Quang Khải streets. It is currently the home of Huế FC, which plays in V.League 2. Floodlights were installed in 1983, allowing night matches. Major renovations came in 1994 with new drainage and stands C and D, and again in 2004 for the 6th National Huê Đổng Games, which added a swimming pool and synthetic running track around the pitch.

Historical significance endures. On August 23, 1945, the stadium hosted a major rally welcoming the Revolutionary Committee led by Tố Hữu. Five days later, it hosted another rally to welcome the Viet Minh Government delegation for the abdication of Emperor Bảo Đại. These events directly led to the renaming.

The stadium remains active despite its age. Stands from 1957 and 1976–1977 have been repaired rather than replaced.
