Stadion Rote Erde

The Stadion Rote Erde was built by the Municipality of Dortmund to put men to work. Using unemployed labourers during the Weimar Republic, the project ran from 1924 to 1926. It opened on June 6, 1926, under the direction of urban planning director Hans Strobel.

Borussia Dortmund moved from the Weiße Wiese to this ground in 1937 after the Nazis requisitioned the original site. They played here until 1974, when they relocated to the Westfalenstadion. The wooden stands that allowed 42,000 people to squeeze in during the 1960s were dismantled after the move.

The capacity for football today sits at 9,999. The official attendance record remains from April 8, 1967, when West Germany beat Albania 6–0 in a European Championship qualifier. It also hosted a match between the Third Reich and the Irish Free State in 1935.

Currently, Borussia Dortmund II use the venue, along with the women's team since 2021. Athletics clubs like LG Olympia Dortmund also train here. The pitch received a new grass deck and heating system in 2022. You can find the ground at Strobelallee 40.
