The Stan Robinson Stadium

The pitch at Marston Road sits in a quiet patch of Stafford, overlooked by the A50 dual carriageway rather than the town centre itself. Opened in 1896, the venue has hosted competitive football for nearly a century and a half, changing its name from the Albion Ground to Marston Road before becoming The Stan Robinson Stadium in August 2023. The renaming honoured Stan Robinson, a former club director and long-time supporter who passed away in 2012, but the stadium remains firmly rooted in its history as the home of Stafford Rangers FC, which purchased the site in 1920.

The layout is typical of a non-League pitch: natural grass maintained by an irrigation system, with no under-soil heating. The capacity is a matter of local debate, cited variously as 3,030 or 4,150, though the record attendance of 8,536 on January 4, 1975, during an FA Cup third-round tie against Rotherham United, suggests the ground can hold far more than its current average. That match remains the single occasion where the stadium was truly full.

The stands are functional rather than grand. A seated stand dates from 1975, while a temporary 2,000-seat structure at the Shed End was erected in 2007 and removed two years later when funds ran dry. Floodlights were installed in 1969, allowing for evening matches long before they became common. Unlike the nearby Stafford Soccer Centre, which relies on artificial turf, the Stan Robinson Stadium keeps its grass, cutting it regularly and hoping for the best when the Staffordshire rain falls. It is not a destination for tourists. It is where the players hand each other a debut and the local supporters gather to watch the team fight for promotion.
