The National T20 Cup stands as the premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Pakistan, operating under the authority of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Introduced during the 2004–05 season, the tournament has undergone numerous rebrandings, formerly carrying the names ABN AMRO Twenty-20 Cup, RBS Twenty-20 Cup, Faysal Bank T20 Cup, Haier T20 Cup, and Zong 4G National T20 Cup. Its primary distinction lies in its structure: while the Pakistan Super League operates as a commercial franchise venture, this event utilises regional associations as its core participating entities.
The current configuration features six regional sides competing for supremacy. These include Abbottabad Region, Bahawalpur Region, Faisalabad Region, Karachi Region Blues, Karachi Region Whites, and Lahore Region Blues. The format typically involves a group stage followed by knockout rounds, with the top performers in each group advancing to semi-finals and the final. There is no system of promotion or relegation; the regional teams remain fixed within the domestic hierarchy.
Historical success in the competition is dominated by a single side. According to records, the Sialkot Stallions hold the record for the most titles, having won the trophy six times. This includes a remarkable five-tournament winning streak between the 2005–06 and 2009–10 seasons. Other notable past champions include the Lahore Lions, who secured three victories, and the Peshawar Panthers with two. In the most recent completed season, 2024–25, Abbottabad Region claimed its first-ever title. The competition serves as a critical developmental platform for players aiming to reach the international level, distinct from the franchise-based entertainment product that defines the PSL. The PCB’s 2020 domestic overhaul shifted the focus entirely from departmental teams to these geographic regions, solidifying the current landscape of Pakistani domestic cricket.
