The event took place at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton over two days, May 27–28, 2021.

The match was created after pandemic restrictions forced the cancellation of the scheduled tour game against Somerset. To maintain fitness and team cohesion, the New Zealand Test squad, comprising 19 players, was divided into two groups. Each side was captained by the senior leadership: one team was named after Kane Williamson and the other after Tom Latham. The format mirrored that of a Test match, although it did not carry official first-class status.

There are no historical records of this being a recurring competition or league. The naming convention was specific to this single instance in 2021.
