The Pakistan Super League is the premier professional Twenty20 cricket competition in Pakistan. It operates under a franchise model with no promotion or relegation, featuring city-based teams owned by private investors. This structure distinguishes it from the regional departmental teams that compete in lower-tier domestic contests. The league is controlled by the Pakistan Cricket Board, making it a single-entity competition.
Founded in 2015, the inaugural season took place in 2016. While the league began in the United Arab Emirates, it relocated to Pakistan in 2020. The 2026 season marks a significant expansion, growing to eight teams and introducing a two-group format. Previously, the competition featured six teams in a double round-robin group stage, followed by playoffs involving the top four sides.
Team participation includes the Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, and Multan Sultans. Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the most successful franchises, each having won three titles. In the 2026 season, the Peshawar Zalmi emerged as the champion.
A key feature of the league is its player recruitment system. Unlike other major global tournaments such as the Indian Premier League, the Pakistan Super League utilizes a draft system with player tiers to ensure competitive balance. This approach contrasts with the open auction model used elsewhere. The competition also has a notable history, including a significant spot-fixing scandal in 2017. The official online presence is maintained at psl-t20.com.
