Rodrigo Rey

Rodrigo Rey came up through River Plate's youth ranks but never played a first-team match there, and the same held at Newell's Old Boys, where he stayed a backup even as the squad won the Torneo Final 2013. Making his Argentine Primera División debut in April 2015, he went on to make around 70 appearances before PAOK signed him for a reported €2 million in 2017.

Greece is where Rey built his reputation. He won the Greek Cup in both 2018 and 2019 and added the Super League Greece title in 2018–19, spells interrupted by loan stints back in Argentina with Godoy Cruz and in Mexico with Pachuca. He left PAOK as a free agent in 2021 and joined Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, where he made 81 appearances and kept 34 clean sheets. That spell also brought a public dispute in 2022, when Rey accused fans of mocking his speech impediment.

Independiente signed him as a free agent in December 2022, initially on a deal running to December 2024 and later extended to December 2026. He has since made over 100 appearances for the club and become a key figure and captain there.

At international level, Rey never earned senior caps for Argentina but represented the country at youth level, taking a silver medal with the under-23s as backup goalkeeper at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and being named an unused squad member for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Away from football, he spoke publicly in 2024 about his son Benicio, who has autism, after the boy's school refused to renew his enrolment.
