Mikael Aggefors kept goal for the club through the years that mattered most. The team he played behind grew out of the handball section of Alingsås IF, split off on 9 April 1973, and reached the top division for the first time in 1998. Two relegations followed in the early 2000s, in 2003 and again in 2005, and both times Alingsås went straight back up; since the 2005/2006 season the men's side has not left the top flight.

The championship itself came twice. In 2009 Alingsås beat IF Guif 29–26 for the title, and in 2014 they did it again, seeing off Lugi HF 24–22. Between those two wins and after them, the club finished as runners-up — beaten in the final by IFK Kristianstad in three separate years and by IK Sävehof in 2019.

Redbergslids IK and HK Torslanda are named as the club's main rivals. The men's team plays in blue and white at Estrad Alingsås, which holds 2,800.
