Two Bavarian clubs supplied the players when HG Erlangen and CSG Erlangen combined their handball sections in 2001. Promotion did not come easily: HCE went up to the Bundesliga in 2014 and came straight back down, and it took until 2016, with the title in the 2. Handball-Bundesliga.

The championship and the DHB Pokal have both stayed out of reach. The closest HCE has come to the cup was in 2022, when it reached the Final Four and ran into SC Magdeburg in the semi-final, losing 22–30.

Johannes Sellin took over as head coach for the 2024/25 season: the A-Jugend and B-Jugend sides both won their Bundesliga championships in 2025.
