HV Unitas

De Boerhoorn is where HV Unitas plays, and on the nights that matter in Rolde, it fills.

Geesje Tijs-Takens started the club on 1 July 1961. Marloes Hoitzing did just that, learning the game at Unitas before moving on to E&O and then into professional handball in Germany, at VfL Oldenburg, Sport-Union Neckarsulm and BSV Sachsen-Zwickau.

The men's side has worked its way up the divisions in stages: promotion via the Tweede Divisie A title in 2012/13, another step up in 2020/21, and now a place in the Eerste Divisie. Henk Smeenge, once a player at the club himself, coaches that side today. The regional cup has become something of a habit — won in 2017/18 while competing as Buro Hollema/Unitas, and again in 2024/25 with a 36-26 final win over FHC. Both runs earned a place in the last 16 of the national cup, and in 2017/18 the team pushed on to the quarter-finals.

None of that happens without E&O, the club from Emmen whose meetings with Unitas are known locally as the Drenthe Derby.

The red and blue colours carry the club's nickname into local speech, and on derby nights they are what fills De Boerhoorn.
