Ajax needed somewhere for its teenagers to play matches that mattered, and in 1992 it put a second team into the reserve league to do it. The side has never been a club in its own right — no separate membership, no separate history.

For two decades that meant the reserve competition, where the trophies came steadily: eight titles in the Beloften Eredivisie between 1994 and 2009. Then in 2013 the Dutch federation opened the second tier to reserve sides, and Jong Ajax began playing men's professional football against clubs whose seasons depended on the result.

2017–18 is the season that separates them from everything else. They won the Eerste Divisie outright — the only reserve team to have won a professional championship in the Netherlands.

Michael Reiziger was the coach that year. Within eighteen months Sergiño Dest, Ryan Gravenberch, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Noa Lang had all been moved up to the senior squad — four promotions signed off in the same month of September 2019. That is the measure the club actually applies here.

Home is Sportpark De Toekomst in Ouder-Amstel, holding 2,250. The complex was rebuilt in 2014 with a pool, a jacuzzi and a gym attached.
