For decades, the one sport Kuwait exported with any consistency was handball, played indoors at the Fahad Al Hamad Handball Indoor Stadium in Daiya.

Between 1995 and 2006 Kuwait won the Asian Championship four times, and at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha it beat Qatar in the final for the gold it had missed as runner-up in 1998 and 2002. The side has kept returning to the podium: bronze at the 2022 Asian Games, then bronze again at the Asian Championships in 2024 and 2026. Qatar and Bahrain remain the teams it measures itself against, without either rivalry ever needing a name.

The wider record is more modest. Kuwait has reached the World Championship ten times but never finished higher than 15th, and its two Olympic appearances, in Moscow in 1980 and Atlanta in 1996, both ended in 12th place. Asia has always been the level at which the team matters; the world stage has mostly been about showing up.
