Omonoia Cyp

The Kyriakos Pissis Gymnasium sits inside the Parnassos Strovolou sports complex in Nicosia, and it is here that Omonia 29M's handball section has to make its case.

The section itself only came into being in October 2024, when supporters from Gate 9 walked away from the old Omonia Nicosia board over a dispute about who controlled the club's management rights. Registered first as "Omonia 1948", the name had to be changed for legal reasons before it settled as Omonia 29M.

Within a single season the team won both the Second Division title and the Second Division Cup, in 2024–25, and stepped up to the top flight. Marios Trimithiotis took charge of a squad built almost entirely for that promotion push, with goalkeeper Ioannis Theodoulou between the posts as the results came in. The following campaign, 2025–26, brought a first taste of European competition, in the EHF European Cup, against opposition such as Granitas-Karys — a fixture list that no Omonia handball side had faced before.

Domestically the games that matter most are against APOEL, who share the capital and turn any meeting into a Nicosia derby, and against Nea Salamina. In green and white, in a gymnasium rather than an arena, the club has gone from having no handball section at all to a European away trip in under two years.
