Rumelange

Handball at Espérance Rumelange grew out of a wider sports association. The women's section became the one worth watching first: through the 1980s it reached a level the men's team has yet to match, taking the Luxembourg National Division title in 1987 and then testing itself abroad, facing LC Brühl in the IHF Women's Cup Winners' Cup and TV Lützellinden in the European Cup Winners' Cup that followed.

The men's side, playing under the Esperance Rumelange name, has stayed in the top-flight AXA League — a fourth-place finish in the relegation round in 2021/22 sits among its better recent returns, and last season it finished seventh. The club got back into the top division at one point not by winning promotion but by being repêché after HB Pétange was demoted for want of players. President Elvedin Muhovic has overseen a squad that in late 2023 added some international quality in the form of Greek international Alexandros Vasilakis.

Matches against CHEV Diekirch, HC Standard Luxembourg, HB Mersch, HB Dudelange and HB Pétange give the season its shape, played out at the Salle Omnisports de Rumelange. What the men's team has never done is win the national title the women brought home in 1987.
