Promotion to the top flight came in 2024, when Sambre Avesnois Handball won the Division 2 championship.

The club itself came out of a merger arranged by the Agglomération Maubeuge Val de Sambre in 2010, bringing together HBC Aulnoye-Aymeries and HB Maubeuge Val de Sambre under the name Handball Féminin Aulnoye Maubeuge Val de Sambre.

The 2024-2025 campaign in Ligue Butagaz Énergie ended in 14th place and relegation, but SAHB were reinstated after Mérignac Handball's administrative demotion opened a place back up. A second season in the top flight followed in 2025-2026, finishing 13th, though the league's decision to cut down from fourteen to twelve clubs sent them back to Division 2 regardless.

Home games are played in front of blue and pink at the Salle Pierre-de-Coubertin, with the Salle Jean Lempereur used from time to time as well. The fixture against Saint-Amand Handball carries its own name, the Derby du Nord.

Julien Vasseur was the coach who took the club up in 2024, before handing over to Clément Petit. On the court, captain Dounia Abdourahim — a former French international who went on to represent Senegal.
