Al-Janoub Stadium
Al Wakrah, Qatar
Formerly: Al-Wakrah Stadium
Al-Janoub Stadium stands in Zone 91, looking south from Doha. The design was intended for the World Cup, but the ground has moved on since the tournament ended. The capacity is down to twenty thousand for the local league.
On the pitch, the grass is natural, and the lines are sharp. There are no gaps in the seating, no awkward angles. The place feels empty until it is not.
The stadium opened in the spring of 2019, and the first game was a cup final. Al-Duhail beat Al Sadd, four to one, and the crowd watched the rain. Since then, it has hosted finals and group matches. The Japanese team drew with the Croatian side here, and the rain came down again. The pitch stays cool even when the air outside is heavy. The lights turn on early, and the shadows stretch long across the grass.
Al-Wakrah Sports Club play their home games here. The fans fill the lower sections first, and the upper rows wait for the second half. The roof shifts back and forth, opening to the sky or closing tight. It is a ground that changes with the weather, built for a moment that passed but still holds the shape of that time. The seats are numbered, the doors are labeled, and the players walk up the stairs to the tunnel in silence before the whistle blows.
