Arena- Yugra
Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia
The first thing you notice is the way the building cuts against the sky.
Inside, the space is defined by its purpose. The retractable stands allow the room to change shape, shifting from a hockey rink to a concert hall in a matter of hours.
The venue was opened in 2008, built to serve as the home for HC Yugra. The club has played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and the Supreme Hockey League (VHL) from this location. It has also hosted the ice hockey competitions for the XVIII Winter Deaflympics. The capacity is set for 5,500 people, though it can expand for concerts. The air is kept cold by a refrigeration system, maintaining the ice surface.
What remains is the sense of place. The design by Erik van Egeraat is visible in the way the light falls on the stands.
