Ashton Playing Fields

The pitch at Ashton Playing Fields is a patch of natural grass tucked inside an athletics track. The site was named after Mr. H.S. Ashton of Ingatestone, who provided the majority of the funding when the pavilion and grounds officially opened in 1937.

The football pitch is surrounded by the infield of a synthetic track, which replaced the old cinder surface in 1973 after demolition for the M11 motorway. The track was the first of its kind in Essex. The venue serves as the home ground for Woodford Town F.C., who returned to the site in 2021 after a period of ground-sharing. Woodford Green Athletics Club has been based here since 1948. A major redevelopment approved in 2019 cost £1.6m and included the construction of a new 350-seat grandstand and modular team facilities. The attendance record is 822, set at the club’s inaugural match at the renovated ground on August 13, 2021, against Stansted F.C. The venue has no former official names, though the athletics component is sometimes referred to as Ashton Athletics Track. Notable events include Woodford Town F.C.'s FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round in the 2025-26 season, where they lost 0-1 to St Albans City in front of 477 spectators.
