Balaton Szabadidő és Konferencia Központ

The Balaton Szabadidő és Konferencia Központ is a facility that does not hide behind the name of a single sport. While many grounds in Hungary are built for one purpose, this complex has always had to balance the needs of a handball team with those of a conference town. The architecture reflects that dual life: designed by János Ripszám, the building opened in November 2004, funded by a significant investment from state and city sources. It is not a cathedral of football, but a practical hub where international matches and corporate galas share the same air conditioning.

The primary tenant is Balatonfüredi Kézilabda Sport Egyesület (BKSE), a professional handball side competing in the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. The team has brought European football to this hall on occasion, hosting matches against Ademar León and Füchse Berlin. These fixtures do not draw crowds comparable to the big league, but they bring a certain gravity to the space. The floor itself is distinct—a DESSO DLW Sports System parquet surface, layered with foam and steel, designed for the sharp movements of handball rather than the sliding tackles of football. It is a floor that demands precision.

For those who do not follow the sport, the venue is perhaps better known for its flexibility. The capacity shifts depending on what is happening on the court. Fixed seating holds 712, but with movable stands installed, the space can accommodate over 1,000 people. This adaptability has allowed the centre to host concerts, including a notable performance by Bereczki Zoltán with orchestra, and the 55th anniversary concert of the band Omega. The outdoor stage, renewed during the initial construction, faces the hall, bridging the gap between the indoor sports action and the open-air entertainment that defines the Hungarian summer season.

The building has aged gracefully, undergoing renovations to modernise its ventilation and replace older heating systems. It operates independently, managed by Észak-Balatoni Regionális Konferencia Központ Kft, without a history of name changes or relocations. It remains a quiet fixture in Balatonfüred, serving the local team on weekdays and the wider community on weekends, indifferent to the weather outside.
