Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club Ground

The ground sits quietly in the Cinnamon Gardens suburb of Colombo. The Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club Ground is defined by its age and the long lease that keeps it here. The club moved to this specific plot sometime in the last half-century; the exact date is disputed between the early 1970s and the late 1960s.

It is a cricket venue first and last. The grass is natural, and while the outfield can turn heavy with the monsoon rain, the central strip is carved out for red-ball play. It has not hosted the big international Test matches, but it has served as a quiet home for blind cricket internationals, including the series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka that took place here in 2019. The pitch has also seen tours from England in the early 2000s for net practice, a chance for visiting players to adjust to the local conditions before heading to the main arenas.

There is no seating capacity figure that stands out in the records, nor is there a single match that drew a crowd twice the size of the city. It is a working ground, one that has hosted over 200 first-class matches since its first recorded top-level game in December 1991. The atmosphere is not one of roaring crowds but of steady, local competition, such as the historic school matches between Royal College and Nalanda College. It is not a stadium of headlines, but a place where the game is played, season after season, without the need for special recognition.
