Bukhungu Stadium

The ground sits on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway in the Lurambi area. It is not merely a local venue; it holds the distinction of being the first football stadium built in East and Central Africa.

The name itself tells a story of displacement. Derived from a Luhya term meaning "the field of being chased away," it recalls a time when local residents were driven out to make space for European settlers. The stadium opened its doors in 1952, a year that marks the beginning of its life as a sporting arena.

Recent years have seen the ground transformed. Major renovations began in 2016 under the direction of the county government, aiming to bring the facility up to modern standards. The work has been extensive, involving the construction of new stands, improved drainage, and upgraded floodlighting. The surface is natural grass, described as lush and well-drained, ready for the rigours of professional play.

The capacity is listed as 25,000, a figure that reflects the scale of the rebuild. The stadium is home to Kakamega Homeboyz FC and Western Stima FC. In 2024, the homeboys were forced to relocate their matches to Mumias due to delays in the finishing works.
