Celal Atik Spor Salonu
İzmir, Turkey
Formerly: Fuar Kapalı Spor Salonu
Inside the hall, the atmosphere is specific to indoor ball sports rather than the roaring crowds of a football terrace. The wooden parquet floor is a requirement for the basketball and handball teams that call it home, but it also hosted the preliminary round matches of the 2012 UEFA Futsal Championship. When the Turkish national side played Moldova and Switzerland under those lights, the acoustics were tight, bouncing every dribble and shout back onto the court.
The capacity is modest, a crowded 1,700 seats. It is not a place designed for history books, but rather for local club matches. The İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi teams use the space to drill and perform, switching off at the back when the defense gets stretched. The venue has seen better days, and the seating has been updated since it first opened in 1989, but the structure remains solid.
It is also a place where politics and sport sometimes overlap. Local forums have been held within its walls, bringing the city’s concerns into the same space as the athletes. It is a functional building, unpretentious and utilitarian. You do not come here expecting a temple of football; you come to watch a game where the players are close enough to hear them breathe. The glass facade reflects the surrounding park trees, blending the industrial nature of the arena with the green space outside.
