Colombo Cricket Club Ground

The ground belongs to the Colombo Cricket Club, a club that dates back to 1832. It sits at 31 Maitland Crescent in Colombo 7 (Cinnamon Gardens), a stretch of land that holds three cricket grounds. It is a place with a long history. The ground opened in 1894 when the club moved to this site from its original location in the city centre. It was formerly known as the Maitland Crescent Ground. The playing surface is natural grass. The capacity is 6,000 spectators, though some sources cite 14,000. The 6,000 figure is recognized by official cricket statistics bodies. The ground is considered one of the smallest in the world to have hosted Test matches. It hosted its first Test match on 14 March 1984 (Sri Lanka v New Zealand), followed by Sri Lanka v Pakistan in March 1986 (Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets) and Sri Lanka v New Zealand in April 1987 (drawn). No Test matches have been held there since 1987. The ground has no floodlights. It hosted the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1927 (maiden first-class match) and 1933–34, and Bradman’s Invincibles in 1948. It was a venue for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2006 and hosted warm-up matches for the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025. It is a regular venue for domestic tournaments including the Major League Tournament. The official attendance record is not found. No major financial renovations or rebuilds with specific costs have been recorded, though modern facilities like a new Member's terrace are mentioned.
