Stadium
Forbes Field
Pittsburgh, United States
The structure itself announced a shift in how these buildings were conceived. Built of steel and concrete, it was designed to outlast the timber and tin that preceded it.
This permanence allowed it to host more than one sport. The Pirates played here for sixty years, but the Steelers also claimed it as a home for three decades. The stadium adapted to these different needs, replacing the wooden outfield walls with brick and ivy in 1946, a change that softened the hard lines of the concrete structure. The right-field roof became a landmark of its own, the spot where a legendary swing finally cleared the barrier.
