Gölbaşı Cumhuriyet Spor Salonu

The Gölbaşı Cumhuriyet Spor Salonu serves the residents of Şafak Mahallesi as much as it serves the basketball team. TED Ankara Kolejliler moved their home games here in 2022, after the club struck a deal with the local municipality.

The floor inside is wooden parquet. A report from 2020 noted that 1,330 square meters of this surface had been replaced, a job likely done to satisfy the requirements of the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi (TBL). The arena does not look like a cathedral for sport. On other nights, the same lights illuminate volleyball matches, handball championships for local schools, and political congresses. The AK Party has used the space, filling it with delegates who arrive in sedans and leave before the final buzzer. The building does not distinguish between a game and a meeting; it simply provides the walls.

It is distinct from the Gölbaşı Kapalı Spor Salonu in Adıyaman, a different town entirely, and the swimming pool complex nearby that bears the name of Rauf Denktaş. The capacity is not a number found in any public record, nor is the date of its opening. The facility has seen work in 2014 and 2020, updates that kept the lights on and the parquet from rotting. It is a functional box in a garden suburb, quiet until the players arrive. The away team steps off the bus onto the same pavement as the locals. They play in the same hall where a party conference was held the week before. The connection is not made in the stands, but in the air, which smells of sweat and floor polish.
